Space

Metrology equipment in the space sector needs to be able to measure large and complex parts in-situ.

Key issues in the Space sector

In the Space sector, with systems such as radio and optical telescopes and satellites, reliability, and accuracy are important.
Frequently specified metrology products include

  • Metronor probing systems
  • Portable arm CMMs
  • Laser trackers
  • LUPHOScan
  • Interferometers

In the environment of space technology and research, we find two groups of products that are frequently used. Large-volume measurements are made with laser trackers, portable arms, and the Metronor DUO probing systems. Products and systems such as interferometers and non-contact measuring systems such as Taylor Hobson’s LUPHOScan are used for research and to aim in the development of new products such as complex aspheric telescope lenses.

These measurement systems support the latest manufacturing processes such as diamond turning which produce super high quality lenses and optics.

Other Sectors where Metrology plays an important role

Rail

Rail

In the rail industry, accurate and repeatable surface roughness measuring equipment for machined wagon wheels and bearing journals is important.

Medical-implant

Medical

In the medical environment with medical device manufacturers, products like vision systems are being used to measure small and intricate components.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing requires a whole range of measuring equipment in order to continuously assure quality and enhance productivity.

Typical Applications

Large-scale measurement technologies are normally deployed in the mining sector in order to handle measurement applications on equipment such as dredges, and haulage equipment.

Alignment of shafts and gears

The accurate and fast alignment of shafts and gear assemblies in the mining sector is a key area where optical alignment technology such as Taylor Hobson alignment telescopes are being widely used. This allows maintenance groups to re-align shafts and drives in equipment quickly and efficiently in order to minimize downtime in key plant and equipment such as coal dredges.

Reverse engineering of worn or obsolete components

In the mining sector, there is a constant need to reverse engineer or to re-measure existing components and assemblies in order to facilitate repairs or the fabrication of new components where drawings are unavailable. The use of portable measuring equipment such as portable arm CMMs and the use of laser scanners is now quite common in this sector.

The use of such equipment allows measurements to be taken in the field and remotely with portable measuring equipment which is both accurate and with trained and skilled operators – produces highly repeatable results.

Surface roughness of shafts, journals and sliding surfacespus?

The measurement of surface roughness of shafts and mating and sliding surfaces on components is always a key requirement in the mining sector in order to provide greater reliability for valuable equipment and to maximise up-time.

The use of portable surface roughness testing equipment such as the Taylor Hobson Surtronics range has become over recent times very much the industry standard for these types of accurate and easy to use portable systems.

Measurement of structures and fixtures

The accurate location and position of elements in large structures in the mining sector has always been a key requirement. Previously surveying equipment such as total stations were widely used but these types of systems are best suited to surveying applications rather than large scale metrology tasks and this is where the increasing use of products such as laser trackers have become more widespread across the industry in recent times.

Laser trackers provide highly accurate ways in which to measure the position and the size of structures and elements within the structure to an absolute position or to the components themselves.
