Surface roughness measurement systems are devices that measure the surface roughness or contours of surfaces. Typically these devices use a stylus that runs over the surface being measured and an element called a gauge converts the small up and down movements of the stylus to an electrical signal that with the aid of software quantifies the measurement.

Extended Surtronic DUO range
The new DUO extended reach (enables measurement in spherical chambers down to Ø200 mm and cylindrical bores down to Ø70 mm) and the New T-Meter II (4 Parameters Ra, STG, CSP, Ft) concrete surface measurement in accordance to Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association Standard ST-115.
Taylor Hobson technology is well known in Australia as a result of superior performance and longevity. The surface profiler range is extensive and includes all types of surface roughness and profile measurement equipment, both for the shop floor as well as for use in many QA Labs.
The Taylor Hobson advanced manufacturing facility in Leicester, UK produces the surface profile ad roughness measuring equipment and has it’s own UKAS-certified laboratory that is capable of certifying the accuracy of all equipment and reference standards supplied.
Taylor Hobson have three distinct ranges of surface profilers and roughness measurement products – Surtronic, Shop-floor – INTRA and lab equipment. The use of all of these products is now further explained.
The Surtronic range of surface profilers and roughness measurement systems consists of two products the DUO and the S100 (superseding the very successful S25 product).
The DUO is a two piece system with a motorized skid and stylus unit performing the roughness measurement and a display unit with sends and receives data from the stylus unit via Bluetooth connectivity.
The S100 system consists of two models, the S116 and the popular S128 system with both having a motorized pick-up which houses the stylus connected to a display and control unit. These systems are most suitable for measuring inside small diameter bores and gear teeth and other hard to reach places. The data collected can be exported to free Talyprofile Lite software.
The INTRA range consists of two model products, the INTRA (with a 1 and 2 mm gauge range) and the wide range INTRA CONTOUR with a 20-32 mm gauge range.
Software options for the INTRA systems includes both Talyprofile Silver standard 2D profile software or Taylor Hobson-developed ULTRA software.
The Talysurf range consists of three basic models -Talysurf i-series, Form Talysurf and Talysurf CNC. The Talysurf i-series is an excellent allround system for 2D and 3D measurement of products such as bearings and other concentric components. Whilst the Form Talysurf is suitable for most applications where low noise and high repeatabilty is required.
The Talysurf CNC is usually specified where large numbers of the same part need to be measured at the one time for SPC and other analysis tasks.
