The 4D InSpec Surface Gauge is the first handheld, precision instrument for non-contact surface defect measurement. With micrometer-level resolution, portability, affordability and ease-of-use, the 4D InSpec brings high resolution measurement to the factory floor, in machine shops and in field service applications.

Use the 4D InSpec to instantly quantify defects such as pits, scratches, nicks, dents and bumps from  0.0002” to 0.1” (5 µm–2.5 mm) deep or tall. You can also measure features such as edge break, radii, rivet depth and part marking.

The 4D InSpec is far more repeatable and accurate than visual comparison techniques typically used for surface defect measurements. Unlike high-end metrology systems it is rugged, flexible and affordable, to measure a wide range of part geometries in factory environments.

The 4D InSpec can be handheld to access tight corners or to measure large surfaces. Optional fold mirrors and alignment tools lets the system access features without line of sight. One-button operation and immunity to sensor movement make it easy to align and measure in any orientation. It can also be mounted in a workstation stand for quality control measurements or on a robotic manipulator for automated measurement of complex components.

The included software makes it easy to quickly acquire and report data in a production environment. Visual feedback indicates when the part is in focus. The Feature Analysis automatically shows all defects or features in the field of view, along with their depth, width, volume, location and other data. An inspector can set criteria to include only features of a given depth or width to quickly identify defects that may be outside of specifications. 2D and 3D plots with multiple cursors can be used to view features in greater detail. Recipes can be developed for particular parts, ensuring repeatable measurements over time and between operators. Data reports are simple and straightforward to generate.

The 4D InSpec system can be used with a number of accessories for efficiency and flexibility, including a HD 1080p touch-screen computer,  benchtop stand, portable workstation cart and rechargeable battery with up to 8 hours operational time.
